Aachen or Bad Aachen, traditionally known in English and French as Aix-la-Chapelle /ɛks.læ.ʃæ.pɛl/, is a spa and border town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Aachen was the preferred residence of Charlemagne, and, from 936 to 1531, the coronation place where 37 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned Kings of the Germans.
